Course of Study

Foundations (3 credit hours)

  • Theory and practice of counseling

    • ​​​Philosophical bases of helping relationships; development of counselor and client self-awareness; counseling theory/techniques.

 

Core Concentration (24 credit hours)

 

  • Proseminar 1: Instructional technology as a profession

    • Introduction to instructional technology as a field including the definition of the field and career options. Additionally, participants will be introduced to visual design principles, ethical issues, and usability testing within the context of electronic media development.

 

  • Instructional systems design

    • Application of theory and research of instructional systems design to solve instructional problems in educational settings.

 

  • Online learning environments

    • Theory, research and practice of designing, developing and evaluating online learning environments including distance education and blended learning approaches.

 

  • Human-computer interaction

    • Survey of human-computer interaction and introduction to human and technological factors of importance to design of usable information systems. Basic phenomena of human perception, cognition, memory, and problem solving, and relationship to user-centered design. Methods and techniques for interaction design and evaluation.

 

  • Understanding online interaction

    • Assessment and evaluation of online learning environments using data-driven techniques.

 

  • Introduction to multimedia instruction (Taken as an independent study)

    • Selected computer-based multimedia production tools and use to produce instructional materials based on specific learner characteristics and objectives.

 

  • Practicum in online learning environments

    • Field-based project involving aspects of the instructional design process in an online learning environment with reflection on theory and practice issues.

 

  • Proseminar 2: Trends, issues, and careers in instructional technology

    • Capstone course for the master’s program will include design, development and review of the portfolio requirement as well as discussion of current issues, trends and professional development opportunities in the field.

 

Research (3 credit hours)

 

  • Introduction to Qualitative Research in Education

    • Fundamentals of qualitative methods. Overview of various qualitative approaches, data collection and analysis methods. Focus on skill development for data collection through interviews, observation, and document analysis, as well as the importance of reflexivity as a qualitative researcher. 

 

Electives (3 credit hours)

 

  • Professional Ethics in Instructional Technology

    • Introduction to professional ethics related to instructional technology including topics such as electronic data security, equitable access to technology and electronic information, protecting client/user privacy, ethical policies, Americans with Disabilities Act related media development issues, and future trends.
